Following natural landscapes, humans and human figures have been the most important subjects for artists throughout history. In the realm of art history, painters who devote their skills to portraying the human subject with precision and realism are commonly classified as figurative artists. The rise of realism in visual arts during the 19th century is closely associated with the flourishing of figurative painting. In the 20th century, expressionism and abstraction emerged as dominant approaches in the art world, pushing the importance of representation in painting to the sidelines. Nature painting has been largely set aside. However, the significance of the figure in the works of contemporary painters has not diminished. Combining figures with abstraction became popular in past decades and this is now regarded as one of the main trends among Iranian modern artists. The current exhibition aims to provide an overview of the selected works of contemporary painters who have expertly pursued these two dominant approaches in their work.
